Gravel Driveway

A gravel driveway is often viewed as one of the lower cost driveway solutions – but not a lower-quality driveway solution.

A well designed gravel driveway can be a permanent driveway.  And the gravel driveway can also be fairly low-cost to build and to maintain, giving years of good service with just a little maintenance over the years.

Is A Gravel Driveway Right For You?

If you’re thinking that a gravel driveway might be a good solution for your home, just a few items are needed. First of all, an experienced driveway designer can help. A  professional driveway design/landscaping company can design and build a fantastic visually appealing driveway for the entrance of your property that will look great and will last for years.

Gravel Driveway

Common driveway materials such as asphalt or concrete may be out of place for some homes in the country. The choice of gravel for a driveway opens up many options.

The gravel can come in many shades such as tan, gray, red, white or black, depending on what’s available at local suppliers.

The Driveway – The First Impression

In many cases a driveway is typically the first impression of a home. As a result, gravel stones that are vibrantly colored can give that bold statement you have been in search of.

On the other hand are concrete driveways. Concrete driveways, if they have not been designed and built correctly from the beginning can be very difficult (and expensive) to correct.

Another option such as asphalt can cost more and only comes in one color – black!

Gravel driveways,on the other hand, can be changed at most any stage. In addition, maintenance is easier in most cases as all that is needed is to add in more gravel or smooth over when needed.

Basic Gravel Driveway Design Thoughts

Like most of other construction projects, you should prepare before building a gravel driveway. The first thing to think about is the purpose of the area being graveled. What and who will be using this driveway? Will it be mostly foot traffic, light passenger cars or heavy trucks?  If the driveway will be used often by cars or heavy vehicles, the gravel needs to be deep enough for this added stress.

However, if the area will only receive foot traffic, then a less deep layer will often suffice.

There are also different types of gravel that are used for construction purposes. As a result this means choosing the right gravel type for your property. Most of all, avoid round stones that will need regular maintenance and can slide out of their position easily. The angular stones are a far better option when it comes to driveways as they are able to lock-together which minimizes movement.

You can ask a professional landscaping company to help you what will work best for your particular driveway design.

Four Seasons Landscaping has the experience and equipment to design and build the gravel driveway of your dreams. Why not give us a call at (719) 266-1141 or use the contact form on the right to discuss your new gravel driveway!

Deer Resistant Landscaping

by | May 18, 2018 | Articles

Landscaping in the Colorado Springs area can be quite fun, and yet it can also prove quite challenging. Colorado Springs has a distinct environment that combines the majestic mountains of Eastern Colorado with the dry and windy plains. That combination gives the landscape around Colorado Springs a unique feel and look that you don’t find in any other corner of the state.

deer resistant landscapinghttps://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/deer-eating-Depositphotos_104789042_l-2015-640-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px">

With people living together with wildlife, it’s not uncommon to see deer hanging out in communities all around the city. Kids might marvel at this, but a novice landscaper might find this to be quite a nuisance, as the deer seem to eat just about anything that grows.

Deer Resistant Landscaping?

When doing landscaping in Colorado Springs, it’s crucial to know what various kinds of perennials and shrubs are available to you to both make your yard lovely but also keep deer from chewing up what you plant. Keep in mind that most of the plants mentioned in this content are typically deer resistant, but serious drought conditions can make deer hungry enough to eat practically any plant.

Deer weren’t really seen as a major issue until around a decade ago when their numbers shot up in the area. The deer started munching their way through lawns and gardens, and even becoming a road hazard in some corners of the city.

No Predators, So Deer Population Grows

It’s been a while since this area has had natural predators of deer, so deer now consider this area not only safe but comfortable, both in the suburbs and even a number of urban areas. With development continuing both west and east, the few predators are pushed out, meaning there is even more habitat favorable for the proliferation of deer.

As such, gardens around the city are under assault from deer every month of the year. Winter is when things are worst, as deer are hungry and the trees they like to eat foliage off don’t have anything available to them. This is when deer resistant landscaping really comes in handy.

We’ve actually seen entire hedgerows of rhododendron and yew stripped of their foliage in under a week. Springtime isn’t fun either since the deer voraciously eat everything and anything green that they see. We’ve seen deer do damage to new foliage on a variety of plants that are usually safe members of the deer-proof list.

Deer, just like people, have foods they prefer to eat over others, and they unfortunately include garden staples like tulips, hostas, daylilies, and roses. While you’re sleeping, they can strip your vegetable garden or even wreck a new fruit tree that isn’t protected by strong, tall fencing. So, if you’re not willing to fence or cage every one of your plants, it might be smart to make some different planting choices.

A lot of the plants we often plant we do so as ornamentals; however, they were once thought of medicinal plants, and they’re usually prime options for deer-resistant plantings. Some of them even have poisonous properties, whereas others are scented strongly or just have unpalatable leaves.

Deer-Safe Plants (Not Necessarily Deer Proof)

Most deer will generally avoid eating spiny, fuzzy, or coarse plants, particularly with robust aromas, especially lemony or minty ones. The following are potential choices that might save you the utter frustration of these cute pests dining on your garden.

  • Bulbs: grape hyacinth, ornamental onions, snowdrops, daffodils.
  • Annuals: larkspur, gaillardia, snapdragons, dusty miller, California poppers, sweet alyssum, lantana, and ageratum.
  • Perennials and Biennials: achillea, monkshood, Russian sage, chrysanthemums, dianthus, delphiniums, foxglove, bleeding heart, rudbeckia echinacea, iris, penstemon, coreopsis, lavender, hellebore, and alliums.
  • Groundcovers: periwinkle, berengia, lamium, snow-in-summer, sedums, St. John’s wort, and periwinkle.
  • Vines: Boston ivy, trumpet vine, morning glory, wisteria, and clematis.
  • Shrubs: Buddleia, American box, dogwood, forsythia, mock orange, rugosa roses, syringa, weigela, rhododendrons, mahonia, fragrant daphne, Ceanothus, and barberry.

Be mindful of the fact that all these plants aren’t deer-proof, just resistant.

New and small plantings are more likely to get sampled and even pulled from the ground as deer run taste experiments. Shrubs and trees sometimes get damaged until they mature enough to recover from occasional chewing.

Ignored plants from one region might be fine dining in a different one, and plants known to have been ignored for many years might be prime cuisine the coming season. Have patience in getting to know what tastes your local deer have, so you can plant accordingly.

When you plan ahead prior to doing Colorado Springs landscaping, you can spare yourself stress and avoid feeding the deer your valuable money and time with a few smart choices for deer resistant landscaping. Good luck, and enjoy your gardening.

Improving Your Home Resale Value With Landscaping

by | Sep 26, 2018 | Articles

Can you use landscaping for improving your home resale value? Yes, you most definitely can. You will be able to attract more buyers by improving upon your property’s aesthetic appeal (curb appeal too). However, you need to settle on your reason for doing this in order for you to focus on the right stuff. Do you want to improve your property’s appearance before selling it off? Or do you or are you simply looking to create a more comfortable living environment?

increase home value through landscapinghttps://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/20180822_111254_1535126199008-300x196.jpg 300w, https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/20180822_111254_1535126199008-768x501.jpg 768w, https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/20180822_111254_1535126199008.jpg 850w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px">

By finding out the reason behind this home improvement project, you can be able to formulate a clear set of goals.

Improve Your Home’s Value In A Cost-Effective Manner

When it comes to selling a house, it’s important to start by thinking about how to improve on the value of the property, quickly and as cost-effective as possible. Landscaping is one of the first things that most homeowners consider, mostly because it’s one of the first things you see.

Landscaping involves modification of the natural look of a given outdoor space. To some people, landscaping is all about gardening. It may however, also involve the installation of structures such as walls. Or, maybe some definition of “landscaping” could mean an in-depth cleaning of a neglected property.

You need only think about how you want the space to look like. In this case, everything is all about you, including the process and design adopted to deliver the necessary results, as well as how you want things to be done. On the other hand, your personal preferences will have to take a back seat if you are looking to improve the value of the property. Instead, focusing on the needs and preferences of potential buyers is the priority.

At this point you will have to conduct some research, in addition to consulting with experts.

According to Bob Vila (www.bobvila.com/articles/347-landscaping-a-good-investment/), a good landscape design can increase a home’s value by as much as 20%

A 20% increase in property value may not seem to be much, but when translated into real numbers, this might mean a $50,000 increase to your $275,000 property. Not as insignificant as you initially thought right?

It is important to meticulously plan how to make the necessary modifications, given this substantial increase in value. To set yourself apart, you need to make objective decisions, so as to be able to earn that additional amount. When it comes to landscaping to raise your home’s value, follow the tips below.

Read up on Current Landscaping Trends

Fortunately, there is a sea of materials relating to this specific topic. Your main task is to read up on the processes and designs that best cater to you and the available space. Take time to consider timeless designs that have stood up to the test of time. Furthermore, as you do your research, be sure to consider the seasons.

Consider What Other Homeowners Are Doing

There’s a lot you can learn from other homeowners who have eye catching landscaping. You can study how they used landscaping to modify their homes’ appearance. Consider talking to such people. In most cases, landscapers and property owners are usually willing to talk about how they achieve their results.

Get Expert Help

Consult an experienced landscape company while keeping in mind the property value increase you are aiming for. A professional is a must, especially if you’re not an experienced landscape designer.

You should still be involved in the decision making process, even after hiring a pro. Since real estate agents are in constant contact with potential property buyers, you should consider asking for their thoughts as well. They can share with you, the reactions of buyers when they see different types of facades.

Putting It All Together

With inputs from all the sources listed above, you’ll be well able to make a good decision how to proceed with your landscaping project. If you’ve done your homework, then you should see a nice payoff as your home sells!

Colorado Springs Artificial Turf FAQ.

As a high quality landscaping company in Colorado Springs, Four Seasons Landscaping is dedicated to providing the best experience with artificial turf, including putting greens. Colorado offers year round sunshine, which makes outdoor space valuable. But this space needs to be functional, beautiful and easy to maintain.

Artificial Turf https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/synthetic-turf-016-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px">

Artificial Turf

What is the installation time?

In most cases, a lawn can be designed and installed to custom fit your current landscaping requirements in 2 to 4 days. Smaller lawns can be installed in as little as one day.

Where can turf be installed?

Virtually anywhere that natural grass grows. Because of the advanced manufacturing technology of synthetic turf our turf can also be installed in areas that natural grass can’t grow such as: desert areas and extremely cold areas. Turf can be installed on level areas with a porous base that will allow water to seep into the ground through the perforated holes in the backing of the turf. It can also, be installed on hills with slopes up to a 40 degree incline.

The First 30 Days

Day1

Water your new sod immediately after installation.

This first watering must be immediate and should be very deep. This irrigation should equal about 1” (this can be measured with a rain gauge or small cup).

Water two more times this day to insure that the entire soil profile is thoroughly wet.

Day 2-10

Water your new lawn frequently (2-3 times per day). Lift a section of sod periodically to check for soil moisture. Fertilize the new lawn with a balanced fertilizer i.e. 20-20-10 at a rate of 5 pounds per 1000 square feet.

Mow the grass as soon as it has grown enough to require mowing. Do not let the grass get too tall before the first mowing. Mowing grass before it has rooted will not hurt the grass. Waiting until the grass has grown tall and removing a lot of the leaf growth can damage or even kill your lawn. Never remove more that 1/3 of the leaf growth with any single mowing.

Day 11-20

Cautiously begin to reduce watering frequency and increase watering depth (1-2 times per day). Continue to lift a section of sod to check soil moisture during the day especially when an irrigation schedule is changed.

Day 21-30

Continue to reduce watering frequency while increasing watering depth. Watering should now be 1 time a day or even once every other day. Continue to check soil moisture regularly. Sod should be rooting into the ground and should be more difficult to lift from the soil.

Watch the turf closely for signs of drought especially during heat or wind and particularly following a change in the irrigation schedule. Signs of drought are generally seen in subtle and sometimes not so subtle color changes.

Dark blue/silverfish color: This change develops in the early stages of wilt and can be reversible with very little consequence if water is applied immediately.

Silver or grey color: This progression of wilt is the plant begging for water and is a more serious level of wilt that, while reversible will turn brownish straw colored before new green growth begins. Water immediately and increase the watering schedule.

Brown or straw color: This is the color of dormancy. When the grass turns this color, in most cased it is still alive and will green up when sufficient water is added to the lawn. This green up period will take between one and three weeks. Avoid this stage with new sod because newly laid sod may die under sustained dormancy.

The watering recommendations listed above are meant to be flexible based on the soil type and the time of year that the sod is installed. Excessive heat or wind as well as a sandy soil may require more water than sod laid on a well prepared soil during the spring or fall. Always pay close attention to the signs that the grass is giving you and let those signs supersede the directions above.

Fertilization

Fertilize your grass 3-5 times per growing season with a balanced fertilizer. Never miss the fall fertilization. During drought or lower water use applications reduce fertilizations during the spring and summer.

Mowing

Mow regularly never removing more than 1/3 of the leaf growth with any mowing. Mow at a height of between 3” and 4”. Maintain a sharp blade on the lawn mower. Do not mow when the grass is either too dry or too wet.

What holds the turf down?

The turf’s own weight is usually sufficient (approximately ½ lb. per sq. ft.), but we normally add infill to help the fibers stand up naturally to help prevent “matting”. The addition of infill assists in weighting the turf down so it doesn’t shift or move once applied. A combination of sand and rubber infill seems to the most popular.

How well does the turf hold up to outdoor environments and will it fade?

Designed by our own partners, the turf is manufactured using the finest UV treated polyethylene, water resistant fibers.

Does the turf have a warranty?

Four Seasons Turf warrants its products including all putting greens for eight (8) years. We warrant our turf against manufacturers’ defects, such as excessive wear, fading and sun and other defects associated with the manufacture of the synthetic grass. With proper customer care your Four Seasons Turf can last up to 10 years or more.

What kind of maintenance is required?

Four Seasons Turf is as maintenance free as it gets! Once installed, just keep the leaves and debris off the surface. Just imagine for a moment, no watering, mowing, edging, pesticides and seeding. In most cases that could be a savings of up to $8000 per year for a normal sized lawn.

How much water would I really save by using your turf?

According to a water management statistics study, 75% of your monthly water bill is for outside use.

Colorado Springs Sod FAQ

The care you give your new lawn in the first 30 days will determine the success of your new lawn. During the first thirty days your lawn will require light frequent irrigation until the roots extend deep enough into your soil to retrieve deeper water reserves at which time watering should become deeper and less frequent. #coloradospringslandscaper

Dwarf Hybrid Gardenby Four Seasons Landscaping | Mar 19, 2020 | Articles

Dwarf Hybrid Garden

by | Mar 19, 2020 | Articles

dwarf hybrid gardenPeople who don’t have a lot of yard space often turn to dwarf gardening. Dwarf gardening simply means a scaled down version of a traditional garden. When someone chooses to create a dwarf hybrid garden, it means they’re using plants that were crossbred.

Hybrid Plants

Two plants were mixed, and the result of that mixture is the hybrid. These types of plants are bred for specific reasons, such as to create a better fruit, a more vibrant flower or because the plant is hardier when it’s mixed.

If you want to create a dwarf hybrid garden, it means that you’ll get the same type of vegetable you’d get with a full-sized one, but it’ll be smaller. An example of this is cherry tomatoes.

They’re perfect for growing in a smaller garden. You get the same great taste that you get in full-size tomatoes and the plants tend to give a lot of yield. You can get plants such as the dwarf eggplants.

These come in several choices and are just as delicious as their full-grown counterparts. You can establish a dwarf hybrid garden regardless of whether you have a lot of space or not.

Dwarf Hybrid Plants Available As Seeds

You can buy the seeds or plants for your garden at many home improvement stores, online or at plant nurseries. A lot of dwarf hybrid gardening is done by using indoor containers to grow the vegetables or flowers, but you can create a grow area outside.

You can use your patio or your front or back porch. You can also use an apartment balcony to establish your garden. You would just need to be sure that your containers received the right amount of sunlight that the plants needed.

Plus, you’d have to be sure that the container had a way to drain the water. Using a self-watering pot can be useful when you’re setting up this kind of garden, especially if you’re setting it up on wood like a balcony or a deck.

For successful dwarf hybrid gardening, you would just follow the same growing instructions that you would use for regular gardening. You’d follow the soil and sunlight guidelines as well as feeding and watering.

To have a successful garden, plant what you love or what you’ll use. You’ll also want to choose plants based on what’s affordable for you. Choose your garden based on the root system of the plant for the space you’re using.

Ones that need a lot of soil for deep roots don’t work as well in small garden containers but do work if you’re creating an outdoor space for your hybrids. Whether you’re using containers or planting outdoor, you’ll need top quality soil. Organic soil is best for the plant.

No matter what landscaping or other outdoor features surrounds your home, a soothing water feature is always a great idea

There are many options available on the market for a water feature to suit your personality.Budget, personal preference and taste as well as the area available are taken into consideration. Anther reason why water features are beneficial is because they tend to help other landscaping thrive.

water features https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/water-features-013-300x225.jpg 300w" data-lazy-sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" data-lazy-src="https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/water-features-013.jpg" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" srcset="https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/water-features-013.jpg 800w, https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/water-features-013-300x225.jpg 300w" data-was-processed="true">

Fountains

For centuries, fountains have been very popular water features – maybe the most popular. Giant fountains with artistic sculptures and even small fountains that fit on the table top can be a popular choices. Fountains’ great popularity may be because they can easily fit into spaces that are small or awkwardly shaped. A lovely and artistic water feature be added to your outdoor environment with a fountain. Fountains can also perfectly reflect the decor of a home, add a lovely splash of color or even show off a fun or sophisticated personality that the owner may have.

Waterfalls and Ponds

Whether surrounded by nature or in an urban setting, waterfalls and ponds can add a natural aspect to your home. Because many homes in urban areas are compact and small, some believe that adding a waterfall is impossible. However with proper planning and the right landscaping contractor, it is quite possible to have a small waterfall that drops into a small pond, situated neatly in a compact urban yard.

A pond can be placed above ground, in ground or even in a big pot. All a pond really needs it a proper pump that will filter the water all the way back up the waterfall. There are a variety of styles that can be chosen from that will fit in nicely with your design and suit the overall look you are going for. We have seen artsy waterfalls, Roman waterfalls, modern and even natural looking waterfalls built into a backyard.

There is definitely a lovely waterfall and pond style that would fit perfectly in the outdoor space you have.

Water Features and Lighting

When considering outdoor water features, most people don’t think of the type of lighting that would highlight the installation. Quaint looking settings are made up with the perfect combination of lighting and water features. These are the ones that end up looking fabulous.

To enhance waterfalls in the evening hours, choose back-lighting and combine them with spotlights on fountains, sculptures and rain chains. Lighting also adds a lovely splash of color that can change the overall mood of an outdoor area. Simply changing the colors of the bulbs can have quite an effect. For a fun and energetic aura added to your water feature, think about fiery tones of color. If your aim is a more relaxed atmosphere, tones such as violet, cool blue and green are ideal.

A great way to add inviting and warm lighting, combined with relaxing water features, is the use of fire. Torches, outdoor fireplaces or fire pits add the perfect contrast to any water features you may add to your home.

Retaining walls at the most basic add support and containment for soil and shrubbery. At their best, they become a functional space for multi-purpose outdoor space. They can address grading irregularities and truly change the shape and function of open-air areas.

Raised Gardens

Decorative raised gardens can add color and texture to landscaping. Proper drainage and a strong base are critical and our experienced professionals know exactly what to do to achieve the look and feel you desire.

Decorative Rock and Mulch Gardens

Decorative rock and mulch can help reduce erosion, reduce water usage and loss, and improve soil. They are typically used in xeriscape for these reasons and can become their own decorative garden that requires little maintenance.

Natural Stone, Timber and Block Walls

Several options are available for retaining wall materials including natural stone, timber and block. Blocks come in a variety of styles, shapes, colors and textures. Natural stone will vary in shade, shape and style, to create a truly one of a kind look. Rustic and modern homes look great with timber retaining walls as they can add a natural design or a clean, geometric one.

Flagstone or Stamped Concrete Patios

Stamped concrete has a wow factor and is able to mimic several different types of stone, which makes it great for customizing to match your home or desired look. Flagstone patios have their own natural beauty and with a variety of shapes and finishes, they allow for more flexibility in design and patterns.

Flagstone Walkways and Stairs

Flagstone walkways, with or without stairs, add a striking and earthy look to any home’s landscaping. The whimsical designs allow them to follow curves and grades anywhere, and stairs help to address steep grading to make it easier to navigate.

Stamped Concrete Walkways and Stairs

When a flat, safe surface is required, stamped concrete and stairs are a perfect fit. The design will allow for the exact look desired and will create a sturdy walking or wheelchair path. With a variety of patterns, designs and colors, there is no need to have a boring entryway.

Decks

With the breathtaking views in Colorado, a deck is a crucial part of our living space. Let us help you create the deck of your dreams to enhance your outdoor quality of life. Imagine space to grill, enjoy nature or even a cup of coffee. This can all become a reality with a new deck from Four Seasons Landscaping.

Decorative Pavers

Decorative pavers can be used in conjunction with other materials or on their own. This versatility means they can fit in any unique space and have a rustic, European, or playful effect.

Fire Pits

Fire pits can be simple and natural or grand and elegant. Either way, they invite people to sit, relax and enjoy them all year long. Used as a focal point in your backyard landscaping design, they have a way of bringing loved ones together.

Erosion Control and Drainage

When rainwater isn’t draining properly, it can cause serious erosion issues. Proper erosion control measures, including proper grading and draining, can help. Through the use of soil testing, backfilling, drain spouts and more, we can help prevent erosion and problematic water drainage concerns.

Irrigation Systems

Proper irrigation systems are critical for healthy lawns and plants. We can design and install complete irrigation systems or add new zones to your current system to address new landscaping. We can offer repair and maintenance services and even sprinkler blow outs.

Colorado Springs Artificial Turf

As an experienced artificial turf installer in Colorado Springs, Four Seasons Landscaping is dedicated to providing the best experience for homeowners wishing for a green yard without the need for any type of upkeep – including watering, mowing and weeding. If you truly want a beautiful and maintenance-free green yard experience, then artificial turf may just be the answer to your problem

Artificial Turf

Colorado offers year round sunshine, which makes outdoor space valuable. But this space needs to be functional, beautiful and easy to maintain.

artificial turf

Due to Colorado Spring’s dry climate, maintaining a turf lawn can be difficult and expensive. Irrigation, mowing, watering, fertilization, weeding and more are required sometimes weekly in order to maintain a healthy attractive lawn. Artificial Turf can save you time and money while offering a beauty all year long.

Four Seasons Landscaping turf is safe for children, pets, friends, family and you. It is easy to maintain and doesn’t require any chemical treatments, like real grass may, in order to stay attractive. Astroturf or other nylon based grasses can be rough and abrasive, but our turf is made with polyethylene fiber which is softer and more comfortable. It also doesn’t absorb heat like stone, brick or pavement, which means you can walk barefoot on it in the summer too, although it won’t be as cool as natural grass.

Four Seasons Landscaping’s synthetic turf can be installed anyplace natural grass grows or in extreme areas where it is too cold or too dry for regular grass. It can even be installed on up to a 40 degree incline and is custom fit to the space. It takes under four days to get installed, in most cases. And if you hate bugs in your grass, you will love that those creepy critters tend to avoid the turf because there is nothing organic for them to consume.

Artificial Turf Putting Greens

For all you avid golfers out there – an artificial grass putting green just may be the answer to your prayers!

Since Colorado Springs is one of the sunniest places in the US and has mild year-round temperatures, golfers naturally want to be able to play or practice some golf whenever time permits. Four Seasons Landscaping can design and install an artificial grass putting green right in your own backyard! Give us a call today at (719) 266-1141 or use the convenient form to the right and we’ll show you how easy and affordable your own putting green can be!

The artificial turf process is similar to the landscape design process. We begin with a free assessment to review your objectives, answer questions and create a design that will best fit your needs for years to come. Four Seasons Landscaping’s turf is priced by the square footage and additional supplies will be discussed with you in order to provide the best experience.

Spring Landscaping Projects

by | Feb 11, 2020 | Articles

Early spring is the perfect point to get a head start on some basic gardening and landscaping projects. Even though it’s only early February, March and April are just around the corner and will be here before you know it.

That’s why we like to get started on our spring landscaping projects early. Of course you can’t do much when there’s snow on the ground, but Colorado Springs is known for some nice warm days in March. That’s when we get itchy to get outdoors and get going on our landscaping plans.

The following suggestions apply equally well to amateur enthusiasts and professionals; whether you garden for your own enjoyment or get paid for providing landscaping services, these are jobs you can hope to work on as soon as the weather starts to warm up.

landscaping-colorado-springs-001https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/landscaping-colorado-springs-001-300x225.jpg 300w" data-lazy-sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" data-lazy-src="https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/landscaping-colorado-springs-001.jpg" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" srcset="https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/landscaping-colorado-springs-001.jpg 800w, https://fourseasonslandscaping.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/landscaping-colorado-springs-001-300x225.jpg 300w" data-was-processed="true">

You can do these things before the ground thaws.

Maintain & Repair Structural Elements

Structural bits of your yard and garden that need a little TLC will benefit from your attention early on, before they have to compete with more plant-centric gardening tasks.

Early spring is the perfect time to inspect and work on ornamental pieces like arbors, trellises, and lattices. While they’re bare of plant materials (vines and so forth), take a close look at their condition. This is the perfect time to give them a fresh coat of paint, fill holes, tighten up loose nails, and close any gaps.

Repair Stone or Rock Borders

Dry-stacked stone or rock is a lovely material for use in walls and planting borders. Freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can cause the stones to shift, resulting in a damaged retaining wall.

Towards the end of winter your stone borders may be looking much messier. Especially if we’ve received a lot of snow. Temperature shifting and moisture can even render walls and borders unstable and unsafe — an especially important concern if you’re soon going to have children playing in the yard.

Check all dry-stacked stonework to make sure the stones are neatly arranged and stable.

Get Rid Of Debris From Trees And Shrubs

Any mess that’s left over from the fall — or debris and deadwood that’s arrived during the winter — should be removed now. This includes vines and trellises, ornamental grasses (cut them back) and any other plant that looks unkempt and unsightly.

Prune Trees And Shrubs

Getting an early start on pruning gives you time to carefully consider the aesthetic effect your pruning will have. Try using twine to tie up branches so that you can inspect what your work will look like from multiple angles

Touch Up Your Mulch

Wind, snowmelt, and other weather action have likely carried away a fair amount of the mulch you put down in the fall. The soil around your plants needs to head into the warmer months with a solid two-inch covering of mulch to hold in enough water for fresh growth. Mulch can be beefed up with a range of different materials, including compost, wood chips, leaves, bark, pine needles, and more.

Fix Pest Damage

Check your structural elements (including, for example, birdhouses) for damage or dirt produced by wintertime pests. Confirm that structures are still firmly anchored to the ground. Inspect your whole garden for dirt and tunnels caused by burrowers (e.g. moles, rabbits and gophers).

If you find such diggings — in your garden or lawn — break up the dirt with a rake and level out the soil as best you can. For pest damage in lawns, you can re-seed as soon as you’ve leveled the soil.

Check Spring Bulbs

Wide temperature changes will typically make spring-blooming bulbs turn brown. This is normal. Early spring is a good time to check the location of your bulbs, though, so that you have a fresh picture in your mind and you can plant annuals and perennials in relation to the bulbs.

Maintain Tools

Clean up your faithful gardening tools and get them ready for another active season.

Soak tools in warm water if necessary to loosen caked-on dirt. Get any rust off of metal parts with steel wool or emery cloth. They should then be lightly sprayed with a light conditioning oil like WD-40.

Check wooden handles for rough spots and rotted parts and use sandpaper to smooth them down. If you haven’t already, find a dry, secure place to store your tools (should have done this in the Fall).

After the ground has thawed.

Aerate Soil

Check your garden soil to see if it’s ready for digging and aerating. Do not disturb your soil until it has dried out after the thaw.

Be especially careful of aerating over areas with an irrigation system. If the water supply lines are too close to the surface, the aerator could punch holes through them, creating another headache for you when it’s time to turn the sprinklers on.

Apply Fertilizer To Trees And Bushes

Heavy Spring snows and rains will do a great job of carrying fresh nutrients down to the plant’s roots. Be sure not to exceed the allpication amounds as you don’t want to have a bunch of fertilizer run-off if we have a wet Spring.

Pre-Germinate Seeds

Your seeds will grow faster and stronger if you pre-germinate them. Soak seeds in a jar of water before planting. My father used to do this for his garden. I believe the germination rates were much higher after soaking.

Remember that these seeds will still need ample watering when you get them in the ground!

Harden Greenhouse Seedlings

If you bought or raised greenhouse seedlings over the winter, harden them off by slowly exposing them to outdoor temperature and light for increasing periods.

If you’re eager to get a head start on planting, check out vegetables that thrive in cooler weather. Examples include carrots, lettuce, spinach, and peas. On the flower side of the roster, annuals like poppies and bachelor’s buttons will do well with an early start.

Getting outdoors on a nice Spring day can do wonders for your health and mental attitude! Why not put that energy to good use with some Spring Landscaping projects?
